Mokhtar El Baba

Mokhtar El Baba is an artist that uses Islamic calligraphy to better his art.  With the use of his calligraphy he is better able to send a powerful message through his art.  He is known for more of a classical style of art but he has done pieces that are more abstract and experimental.  In addition to his calligraphy use he also tends to give his pieces a vibrant, lively look through the use of bold colors and patterns.
He is using traditional Islamic art forms simply with his use of calligraphy.  Since all his works include calligraphy his style has become more of the traditional Islamic art forms.  Calligraphy is included as a traditional Islamic art form since its use helps preserve the Qur'an.  And with artist like Mokhtar El Baba calligraphy and Islamic art has grown.
I chose to present about Mokhtar El Baba because one of my favorite forms of Islamic art is calligraphy.  And because of this I was drawn to him as an artist.  I like how all his pieces are centered around his calligraphy and I believe that his art stands out with his color and pattern choices.  Lastly I enjoy that while he is known for a traditional style of art he does add a little something new and different to bring excitement to his art.  This is one of his websites http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/biographies/MainBiographies/E/melbaba/mokhtar.htm

  1. I would definitly have to agree with you, his artwork is definitly more on the traditional side because of the frames pattern. Calligraphy is so nice to look at and I really like how he has used the big swoop under the words, which I know thats probably a letter. I would say the modern twist or touch would have to be color choice (agreeing with you again), and the organization of the letters or words...I rally like this piece good work.

  4. I like the artist you have chosen his art reminds me of the artist I have chosen Ali Omar Ermes. Both are contemporary atrist with a traditional flare. I realy like Mokhtar El Baba's calligraphy style its very elegant looking and the lage symbol under the smaller symbol gives a special statement.
